Video Transfer Services Vs. The Do It Yourselfer

Despite the VHS format having been obsolete and completely dead for the better part of a decade now, there are still a huge number of people who have a large collection of movies and home movies on VHS. Personal mementos like birthday parties, weddings, holidays, bar mitzvah's, and vacations are more common on VHS and they aren't DVD simply because the VHS format was the dominant format for the better part of three decades. The DVD format, while existing in the early 90s, didn't really catch on commercially until the late 90s and the early part of the new millennium.
For the many individuals who have precious family mementos sitting on VHS cassettes, determining how to protect them, where to store them, and how to watch them conveniently on modern equipment are all constant concerns. Over the last decade however technology has afforded such individuals with the ability to transfer their VHS movies over to a much more durable medium, the DVD. In addition to the new technologies that have made this type of transfer possible, many companies have popped up that offer transfer services. Having a professional transfer home movies to the DVD format affords individuals a number of advantages though not everyone takes advantage of these.
There are a large number of people who opt to transfer their home movies to DVD themselves. While the process itself is an overly difficult or complicated, and amateur transfer will always be subpar to that of a professional one. With professionals, individuals will receive a transfer service that includes some type of video and audio enhancement as well as corrective measures that enhance the viewing experience on modern equipment. More often than not at home or do-it-yourself transfers are done on very inexpensive equipment and underpowered computers which results in a poor to average transfer.
Some individuals simply don't trust professionals with their home movies while others choose to do it themselves simply because they believe it to be the more affordable solution. Individuals who transfer home movies to DVD themselves will need a fairly powerful PC and a large hard drive. They will also need a DVD burner in that computer and a video capture card with video in and video out functionality. They'll also need play a blank DVDs as well as software capable of capturing and editing the video that a VCR plays into their computer. By the time a do-it-yourselfer puts all this together they will have usually spent just as much and sometimes more so than they would have had they just contacted a professional to handle the transfer for them. Moreover it takes time to set all these things up inside the home and time to learn how to use everything efficiently. Professional transfer services generally present a finished product in just a couple of days so it's not difficult to see why the do-it-yourself crowd has been slowly but steadily shrinking over the past decade.
